Torque is defined as the tendency of a force to rotate an object about an axis, fulcrum, or pivot. Just as a force is a push or a pull, a torque can be thought of as a twist to an object. Torque is a measure of the turning force on an object such as a bolt or a flywheel. For example, pushing or pulling the handle of a wrench connected to a nut or bolt produces a torque (turning force), that loosens or tightens the nut or bolt. Torque instruments are used in virtually every manufacturing operation and many service functions. The validity of the measurement of torque is what assures accuracy. Accuracy in an assembly process or service function is paramount to quality. For several years, Grand Rapids Metrology has been involved in the calibration of small torque devices, increasing our capacities over time. Currently, we calibrate torque devices up to 250 ft. lbs., but are currently in the process of upgrading our abilities as high as our marketplace requires. This process should be completed in the 2nd quarter of 2014. In addition to providing calibration services for torque devices, we believe that our customers should also have access to purchase the highest quality, most technologically advanced torque devices directly from us. It is for that reason that we have recently partnered with TorcUp, and are now the Michigan distributor for the TorcUp lines. For a full description of TorcUp, please visit www.TORCUP.com.
