Torque Wrench Calibration

Why Do I Need to Calibrate My Torque Wrench?

Why do I need to calibrate my torque wrench? If you use your torque wrench as a hammer, and only for that purpose, you don’t need to calibrate your torque wrench, if that’s not you, you’re going to want to calibrate that trusty gadget of yours. This goes for all of your torque tools, transducers, testers, screwdrivers, wrench presets, and wrench DC tools. They all should be getting calibrated yearly at least, that is of course unless you use them as a hammer. Why calibrate them? You want the most accurate readings possible for your equipment so that you can make the best product. If your torque wrench is off by +80 Lbf, you could snap a bolt, which is never good. On the flip side, you could not tighten something enough so it comes loose.

Quality is sometimes viewed as a budget hog. In reality, it isn’t! You are probably tracking the profit & loss for warranty and/or repair works, but are you tracking lost customers or damage to reputation? These things although may be invisible on a stat sheet still count towards higher or lower quality. Think about it, the higher your quality number the more people spread the word, the worse your quality, the more those words come crashing down on what you’re building.

Calibrating your torque wrenches, transducers, screwdrivers, and other tools is a key part of maintaining quality. We calibrate these devices, contact us here.

How Often Should My Torque Tools Be Calibrated?

As an ISO accredited lab, we normally recommend that you calibrate around once a year or every 5,000 cycles, whatever comes first. It’s not uncommon for us to get asked “how often should I get our tools calibrated”. Simple answer, if your tool has experienced an event or is nearly a calibration interval (5,000 cycles or a year). An event can be described as anything that could have altered the accuracy of the device. Dropping, overloading, throwing, and smashing (as if it were a hammer), are all events that can make your tool inaccurate or out of tolerance. Even if the equipment looks fine, on the inside it may not be.

Think about the accuracy of your work being what drives your business. If you are seen bashing a tool as if it were a hammer and then using your customer might start to wonder how accurate a job has been done. They might even go to someone else to check the work you just did. Now you’re balancing a customer’s business on the tip of your finger.
