How to Increase Quality of Food Production and Avoid Potential Recalls

According to the USDA, 1.5 million pounds of meat & poultry were recalled in 2018 due to extraneous material (plastic fragments, metal shavings, latex pieces, or other foreign materials). “The average cost of a recall for a food company is $10M in direct costs” according to a joint study by the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturers Association.

Grand Rapids Metrology helps you keep your profit and avoid potential recalls in two ways: through metal detector systems and calibration! We were presented with an opportunity to make a customer’s food manufacturing process more efficient while mitigating extraneous material risk. As finished product is passed along a conveyor belt, the installed in-motion checkweigher simultaneously weighs the product, and the metal detector ensures product quality.

Metal detectors are an extremely useful tool. When utilized within your current process flow, product is efficiently checked. However, one should not overlook the power of calibration. The food industry prioritizes accurate weight and quality of substance, and therefore, food manufacturing standards are among the most heavily regulated.

Routine calibration helps to avoid potential recalls, due to bad batches, through obtaining reliable and accurately measured values. Many regulation and management standards for food quality stress the importance of calibration. Hazard Analysis and Critical Control (HACCP) regulations that are mandated for meat and poultry, seafood and juice references “verification records that document the calibration of process monitoring instruments.” ISO22000, the food safety management system’s requirements, states in Section 8.3, “The organization shall provide evidence that the specified monitoring and measuring methods and equipment are adequate to ensure the performance of the monitoring and measuring procedures”. Both require documentation of calibration activities to monitor the performance of equipment. Effective procedures for calibration and quality assurance can help achieve this.

Due to wear over time, instruments require calibration at set intervals. This is to ensure equipment is running at prime conditions. Putting off calibration can cause a variety of quality and compliance issues which could result in product recalls and heavy costs.

Don’t be a recall statistic. Our custom engineered solutions team will analyze your current production process and look for ways to increase efficiency as well as quality! Rely on us to keep track of your calibration needs. When a year has passed, we’ll remind you to schedule calibration! Not to mention the new and improved CERTLINK. CERTLINK is our customer portal that will allow you access to all of your calibration certificates and schedules. Reach out to us for more information!

Exciting Things Around the Corner

Exciting changes are just around the corner for GRM and our customers. Although we can’t spill all the details right now, we can give your an overview of what to expect from us in the upcoming weeks and months.

eCOMMERCE LAUNCH

Grand Rapids Metrology’s online store will include an handful of metrology equipment that can be purchased around the clock. Products available are to include Data Loggers, Electronic Calipers, Force Gauges, Gage Blocks, Micrometers, Moisture Analyzers, pH Meters, Surface Plates, Test Weights, Thickness Gages, Torque Wrenches, and an assortment of discounted, miscellaneous metrology equipment.

Shop over 200+ measurement products with a click of a button. Links to the store will be located throughout www.grmetrology.com – just look for the shopping cart icon after the launch this April!

CHANGES TO CERTLINK

Currently, GRM is undergoing a technology overhaul where many of our softwares are being changed and updated. It’s been a crazy process but at the end of it, we’ll be fast, more informed and better able to serve the needs of our customers.

Most of these changes won’t affect you directly (other than an improved experience with GRM), expect for one – CERTLINK.

In late spring/early summer of 2018, you can expect the launch of our new and improved online calibration management software, CERTLINK. This updated version of CERTLINK will feature increased functionality, user-friendly navigation, and a new look and feel to the interface.

Don’t fret – we’ll make sure you know all the details before the launch. Keep an eye out for more information on CERTLINK as summer approaches!

NEW FACES OF GRM

Lastly, Grand Rapids Metrology has grown a lot over the past few years and we’re still growing! With growth comes a need for a larger workforce to continue to exceed expectations for our customers everyday.

Over the past couple of months, we’ve added roughly 10 new members to our team. If you see a new technician onsite or speak to an unfamiliar voice over the phone, just know that our team is growing rapidly all in the interest of providing our customers with the best service possible!

That’s all for now.

If you have a question about these changes, feel free to reach out and we’ll be happy to answer your inquiry!

Investment in Technology

Important CERTLINK Changes

In July of 2014, Grand Rapids Metrology launched its incredible online calibration management system- CERTLINK. This software has allowed our customers the ability to easily view and maintain their calibration certifications, equipment list (including manufacturer, model number, serial number, etc.), review their calibration schedules, and see full reports from previous calibrations. The technology is also free to all GRM customers and is available 24/7/365!

As a Grand Rapids Metrology customer, you probably know most of that information. However, what you may not know is that we have recently improved and updated this system and there are a few changes we want to make sure you are aware of:

  • Two new flowcharts: Service Flowchart and Rental Flowchart. These new flowcharts give more information on where equipment is at any time due to the tracking statuses. They also show more events to give a clear representation of how the equipment flows though the different processes (work in process, awaiting shipment, etc.).
  • There are new packing slips attached to receiving and shipping event on the website which can be emailed if preferred.
  • The handwritten Customer Acknowledgment Form will be replaced and instead will be created electronically and then emailed. It will soon be called Summary of Service Report. You will see this in use very soon.

The goal of these constructive changes have many purposes: to continuously improve our efficiencies while reducing our paper consumption, investing in technology to streamline the service process, and create a more visually engaging and logical experience for our customers and employees.

If you have any questions regarding the new system updates, please contact your Service Manager for more information.
